Hangouts
Since July 2024, Dramawerkz has hosted volunteer-led “drop in” sessions for children and young people in the local area, on Wednesdays after school.
The “Safe Space Hangout” - as it has been affectionately named by our young people - has become a staple in the lives of the young people who attend it. An average of 5-10 young people attend the two hour, free after school session each week, and the vast majority of those young people have returned for future events.
At each drop-in session, young people can play games, play conversation Jenga, go on their laptops, do homework and craft or make art. They connect within their age groups, while our teens also learn to support those younger than them through conversations, helping to grab something from a high shelf, and role modelling positive behaviour. The sessions build community and peer connection every week, and using the community centre as a base ensures a connection to further resources and a sense of “neighbourhood”, as well as prompting intergenerational connection.
